20 Trailblazers Lead The Way In Double Pushchair

Side-by-Side

The majority of light double pushchairs we tested are side-by-side models and are generally recommended for kids who can stand up without assistance, as these models tend to be lacking car seat integration. That said they do have a few advantages. Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double are both excellent options that offer recline that can be adjusted in both seats, a huge canopy, and padded five-point harnesses. Side-by-side lightweight double pushchairs aren't 100% foolproof, howeverwhen your children are at the same age or stage they may still fight over who rides in which seat. And if they're at different heights, a tandem style might be better for them as it will allow them to confront each other.

Tandem

While side-by-side models may be better suited for siblings with similar ages, tandem lightweight double pushchairs offer their own perks. Some can fit carseats that are larger, and others have Reversible seats. Others even have an extra carrycot or a reversible seat in the middle. They are generally more spacious and easier to move into and out of the baskets, though they tend to be smaller than the ones on single buggies. Many also feature more generously big canopies with windows that peek out and a cup holder for the parent and padded leg cushions for children.

The iCandy Peach is another example of a great value lightweight tandem. The fabric is a little less luxurious than our other top-rated doubles but it looks and feels great and is very easy to use. One of the most striking things about it is its single-handed fold. While it does require practice, Kirstie in our Lab has said it's "genius". The carrycot is not foldable when it is attached. However, the mechanism to attach and remove the carrycot is quick and easy.

Tandem strollers are light and lightweight. They typically have tighter turning capabilities than side-by-side models. However, they could be harder to navigate on uneven surfaces and curbs. They can also be slower to accelerate and heavier to move. This can put strain on your back.

A convertible double buggy is an additional alternative. It's initially one but you can also add adapters to make it a double. They can include a second seat, carrycot, or both in the front. Children can sit together. Some of them also offer the option of adding a buggy board, which could help older children keep up with a younger sibling.

The Uppababy Vista V2 is a great example of a convertible, because it can also be converted into a twin pram with the purchase of additional cocoons (PS59 each) that create a lie-flat space for infants. They can be positioned on top of each other or positioned to each other's faces, and you can use them in conjunction with the baby car seat that comes with the pushchair (as long as you choose a compatible one). Our test panel found that the seats to be comfortable for toddlers, with excellent headrests and lumbar support. The biggest drawback of this type of buggy is that it tends to be larger overall than doubles that are side-by-side and makes it difficult to navigate through doorways and can be tricky to maneuver up and down kerbs. However, the wheels and suspension on these models generally are capable of coping with paved surfaces and the fact that they're usually much lighter than some of the side-by-sides, means you still have plenty of storage space. It's important to keep in mind that strollers of this type aren't as adept at walking through the narrow aisles of supermarkets and aren't able to cope with a lot of shopping. It's easier to turn around even on the smallest of curving paths but even this can be difficult. Some are easier to turn than others, such as the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double or Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double.

Convertible

Convertible double pushchairs are fantastic because they are able to be adapted to the changing needs of families. They often start out as single buggies, and have adapters that allow you to add a second seat, a carrycot or (in some cases) the car seat to the frame. Some are able to be converted to a single one when your child reaches the age of walk or wants to ride a buggyboard.
